When is electricity cheaper?
At these consumption figures, electricity breaks even with the petrol example at 118.8c/kWh, before public fees. Divide petrol cents per kilometre by EV kWh per kilometre to find the electricity rate. Public charging or an inefficient driving week can narrow or reverse the difference.
Petrol observations by capital
These ACCC figures are daily regular unleaded averages for 2026-10-14, published 2026-10-16. They are capital-city proxies, not statewide prices or live pump quotes. The calculator’s 205c/L reset value remains a clearly labelled scenario.

Fuel savings are one part of ownership
Purchase price, finance, insurance, registration, servicing, tyres, depreciation and charger installation are outside this comparison. It does not calculate a payback period or a tax saving. Compare the vehicles you would actually buy and the charging access you actually have.
