HOME CHARGING · CHECKED 22 OCTOBER 2026

What will a home charger cost?

Tesla lists its Gen 3 Wall Connector at A$800 for the hardware. Your installed total needs a separate site quote covering labour, cabling and any electrical upgrades.

This is one dated manufacturer price example, not an Australian market average or a cheapest-charger ranking. Check the Tesla Australian product listing for current price, delivery, availability and purchase conditions.

Keep hardware and installation separate

Work out whether you need a wall charger

A suitable existing power point and compatible portable charging cable may cover your driving needs. A dedicated charger can help when you need more energy during a shorter parking window. The Australian Government describes dedicated home AC chargers as typically 7 to 22 kW; your car and supply may accept less. Ask a licensed electrician to check the proposed setup. See the government home charging guide.

Start with your daily energy need: daily km × Wh/km ÷ 1,000 = kWh for driving. An illustrative 50 km at 160 Wh/km needs 8 kWh before any extra allowance. At an assumed average 2 kW reaching the battery, replenishing 8 kWh takes 4 hours. These are arithmetic examples, not a specification for your car or socket.

Try your usable battery size and charging window before paying for a faster charger.

What changes the installation quote?

Tesla identifies cable distance, trenching, switchboard work, an extra sub-panel, mounting and concealed cabling as possible additional work. Its Australian installation guidance explains why the electrical system and hardware affect price.

A dedicated charger must be installed by a licensed electrician, and a switchboard or supply upgrade may be necessary. This is confirmed in the government guide to houses and strata buildings.

Compare quotes on the same scope

Send each installer your vehicle and variant, proposed charger, switchboard and parking photos, approximate cable route, and whether you want solar charging. Ask for a written total showing:

  1. Hardware model, cable and accessories.
  2. Labour, materials, electrical upgrades and testing.
  3. Any site visit, network approval, travel or call-out fees.
  4. GST, exclusions, optional work and what triggers a variation.
  5. Warranty, aftercare, certificates and quote expiry.

Get the site assessed before ordering hardware. Confirm the charger’s plug and your car’s AC limit with the manufacturer. Three-phase capability on a product listing does not establish the power available at your home or accepted by your car.

Solar, schedules and the household bill

Ask whether the proposed hardware supports the exact solar mode you want, whether metering accessories or subscriptions are extra, and what happens when surplus solar falls. Confirm that scheduling works with your plan’s hours.

When comparing plans, include household usage and daily supply charges as well as the EV rate. In our calculator, surplus solar is valued at the feed-in income you give up. That is different from assuming every solar charge has no cost. Read the cost method.

Apartments, renters and rebates

Discuss permission, common wiring, capacity, metering and ongoing billing with your landlord or owners corporation before ordering. The government strata guide links to state-specific information and explains that strata approval may be needed.

Before relying on a grant or rebate, check the relevant government scheme for open dates, property eligibility and whether approval must come before purchase. No rebate amount has been deducted from this example, and no individual state incentive is presented as verified here.

For ordinary power-point charging, follow the vehicle and cable instructions. The government guidance recommends a direct power-point connection instead of extension leads or power boards.
