CHARGING COST GUIDE · 22 OCTOBER 2026
Start with the energy.
Then price the charge.
At 33.1372c/kWh, a 250 km week in the 2025 Tesla Model Y RWD costs $12.67 in electricity at its certified 153 Wh/km baseline. Your bill and driving conditions can change that result.

One car, three price scenarios
| Scenario | Rate | 250 km |
|---|---|---|
| Home, Ausgrid NSW reference | 33.1372c/kWh | $12.67 |
| Surplus solar, illustrative forgone export | 5c/kWh | $1.91 |
| Public charger, illustrative rate | 65c/kWh | $24.86 |
The solar and public rows are editable examples, not current retailer or network quotes. Fees are zero in this table. Daily household supply charges are excluded. Read the measurement and extra-energy assumptions before comparing with a charging receipt.
What does a full charge cost?
Use the energy billed by the charger, rather than assuming a battery’s advertised capacity equals metered energy. For an illustrative 40 kWh delivered and billed at 65c/kWh, the energy charge is $26. Add session, parking or idle fees shown by the charger. Battery size and starting charge determine how much you need.
Home, solar or public?
Home charging uses your actual household rate and time window. Surplus solar gives up export income, so it is not automatically free. Public charging can have different site, member and payment-method prices. A mixed week needs the share charged in each place.
A low overnight EV rate is only one part of the bill. Compare supply, daytime, controlled load, export rates and any subscription before changing plans.
