BATTERY COSTS | CHECKED 24 OCTOBER 2026
EV battery replacement costs and warranty
An Australian Tesla Model 3 battery invoice reported by NRMA was just over $14,000 before installation in 2022. It covered a 60 kWh LFP pack. It is a dated example; a current replacement needs a quote for the exact vehicle.
NRMA's later tables are projections based on global pack-cost forecasts. They are useful context for battery manufacturing costs, but they cannot establish what an Australian service centre will charge to diagnose, supply and fit a replacement today.
Separate a quote from a forecast
| Evidence | Amount | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Tesla Model 3 RWD, 60 kWh LFP | Over $14,000 | 2022 invoice reported by NRMA; installation excluded |
| NRMA projected 2025 pack costs | $6,622 to $18,873 | 40-114 kWh pack scenarios derived from global forecasts; current installed quote unavailable |
Read NRMA's battery-cost evidence, published November 2025 and retrieved 24 October 2026. The historical $14,000 example is over $233 per kWh of nominal pack capacity before installation. That division is an arithmetic description of one invoice, rather than a rate that can be applied to every car.
Australian battery warranty examples
These are headline manufacturer terms for the named vehicles and scopes. Time or distance usually ends cover at whichever limit arrives first. The vehicle's supplied warranty sets its actual eligibility and remedy.

Model year and registration date matter
Kia's published terms distinguish earlier EV3 model years from MY2027 onwards. Its EV4 has the newer battery term across model years. MG's current policy applies its stated high-voltage battery limit to first registrations from 1 July 2025. Older promotional terms can differ. Match a used car's delivery or registration date to its supplied policy rather than choosing the longest term found online.
A capacity threshold has a defined remedy
A retention percentage describes one warranty condition. It does not promise that a battery will be replaced as soon as its displayed range drops. The maker's testing method, exclusions and claim process still apply. Repair or a reconditioned replacement can be an allowed remedy. Ask for the actual measured state of health and the policy clause used in the assessment.
A fault and gradual degradation can have different coverage. Ford's linked Australian policy lists gradual battery capacity loss among exclusions. A 70% figure from an overseas policy cannot be substituted into Australian terms. For any vehicle, use the warranty supplied with that car and obtain the service centre's written diagnosis before comparing repair options.
What to ask for in a repair estimate
Request an itemised estimate identifying the vehicle, pack variant and diagnosed fault. It should state whether the work is a module repair or full-pack replacement, whether the part is new or remanufactured, and what labour is included. Ask about diagnosis, transport, coolant, programming and disposal if those items affect the total. Retain the warranty on the repair itself.
A repair budget should also distinguish an owner-paid fault from a warranty claim or an insurance assessment. The cause of damage changes the applicable process. Compare written estimates on the same scope, including GST and installation. A pack-only number cannot be compared directly with a completed repair bill.
